The top rumor going around online is that it’s a new Facebook phone. This is in spite of how vehemently Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, has denied that there was anything of the sort in the works. Of course, that is probably the reason why people are still talking about it. Mr. Zuckerberg seems to object a little too strongly to that notion. Bear in mind that Facebook is a company of hackers in love with code. They are software geeks not hardware guys. Why limit themselves to one mobile device when they already have their code living, posting, tracking on every smartphone, tablet, and computer on the market?
Ekaterina Walter is a social innovator at Intel. A recognized business and marketing thought leader , she is a speaker and a regular contributor to Mashable, Fast Company, Huffington Post, and other leading-edge print and online publications. Walter has been featured in Forbes and Business Review USA and was named among 25 Women Who Rock Social Media in 2012. She sits on a Board of Directors of Word of Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA) and is an active member of the Thunderbird Global Council at Thunderbird School of Global Management. Her new book “Think Like Zuck: The Five Business Secrets of Facebook’s Improbably Brilliant CEO Mark Zuckerberg” officially releases today.
Or at least that’s the way the official bio runs. After tweeting with her over a period of weeks and then a long conversation via Skype, I can say she’s every bit as knowledgeable as the bio implies. Ekaterina is also a very vibrant, energetic, and passionate woman who is extremely approachable. She is the kind of person you will make friends with quickly and keep as a friend for a very long time.
The mysterious announcement that Facebook promised to make is a mystery no more. During a live media event at the Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, CA, Mark Zuckerberg introduced the beta version of what they are calling Graph Search.
Over the years Facebook has accumulated 1 billion users, 240 billion photos, and 1 trillion connections. The meaningful connections users made on the network in the beginning have become more and more difficult to see as the network has grown. Graph Search is the first step to navigating all the the people and activity on Facebook in order to find new or reestablish existing connections.
Yesterday Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, unveiled the next big step in the social network’s development. Soon Facebook users will be able the search within the walled garden for things their friends like, places they’ve been, and pictures they’ve posted. Currently users can add themselves to a wait list to get this first iteration of search, so it’s not available for use just yet.
This does, however, cause traditional SEO and Social to come colliding into each other when it comes to your business presence on Facebook. After all, what kinds of things can your friends “like?” Or more importantly, how many of any given user’s friends “like” your business on Facebook? Right now you have a golden opportunity to give your business page a tune up before English speaking Facebook users start searching.

The concepts of shared passion and purpose were what resonated most with me when I read this book. I’m naturally a very passionate person, and I know that it’s that passion that often drives me forward. What Ms. Walter points out is companies that instill passion and purpose into their culture are the ones enjoying success right now. It’s not enough that a leader or an individual is passionate about the company vision. Does everyone from the executive leadership team to the hourly support staff wholeheartedly buy into what the company is trying to accomplish? Shared vision and purpose drive success, and, by the way usually lead to a great deal of personal fulfillment along the way.
